Rebuilding the Sheetgo Add-on with AI: 10 Years of Knowledge, Compressed into 4 Months

Over the first four months of 2026, we did something at Sheetgo that we wouldn’t have attempted three years ago: we rebuilt our Google Workspace add-on — the engine that powers Sheetgo’s data automations inside Google Sheets — using AI as a core part of the engineering process.

Roughly ten years of accumulated product knowledge — built up iteration after iteration of Sheetgo’s add-on — was consolidated and rebuilt with AI assistance in four months. The new add-on runs against close to 2,000 automated tests that self-validate and self-correct, on a cloud-native architecture that’s substantially more robust and easier to maintain than what came before.

This wasn’t an experiment. It was an operational transformation, and it was made possible in part through our participation in INTECA 2026, a digitalization program run by the Conselleria de Industria, Turismo, Innovación y Comercio of the Generalitat Valenciana. The project sits within TechFabLab and the GVANext line, and is financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU through the Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia (PRTR).

What changed under the hood

For most of Sheetgo’s history, evolving the Google Workspace add-on followed the classic engineering model: long planning cycles, several engineers, manual QA, gated releases, and a lot of human-dependent steps between writing code and shipping it. It worked, but it was slow, expensive to maintain, and difficult to scale as the product grew.

The 2026 rebuild replaced most of that pipeline with an operational architecture that integrates digital enabling technologies — generative AI, autonomous agents, and cloud automation — into the development process itself. Code is generated, reviewed, validated, and tested largely without human gating. People still set the direction and review outcomes, but the day-to-day mechanics of building and maintaining the add-on are now driven by an AI-assisted system.

The headline numbers

  • About 10 years of accumulated product knowledge, consolidated and rebuilt with AI assistance in 4 months.
  • Close to 2,000 automated tests run continuously against the add-on, with the test suite itself capable of self-validation and self-correction.
  • Cloud-native infrastructure that’s more robust and sustainable than the previous setup — easier to extend, faster to deploy, less reliant on individual engineers’ availability.

Why this matters for Sheetgo customers

In the short term, the add-on is faster, more stable, and on a foundation that lets us ship improvements at a much higher cadence. In the medium term, we have the operational architecture in place to integrate more AI capabilities — agents, generative features, smarter data processing — into the product without rewriting it again.

The deeper story is about how a small technology company can adopt digital enabling technologies into its productive process. That’s the goal INTECA 2026 was built to support, and we’re glad to be one of the SMEs in the Comunitat Valenciana putting it into practice.

About INTECA 2026

INTECA 2026 is a digitalization aid program from the Conselleria de Industria, Turismo, Innovación y Comercio of the Generalitat Valenciana, supporting Valencian SMEs in integrating digital enabling technologies — generative AI, autonomous agents, cloud automation — into their productive processes. The program is delivered in coordination with TechFabLab and the GVANext line, and is financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, through the Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia (PRTR).
