But, it is pretty interesting to note that we can also insert an image inside a cell in Google Sheets. In this article, we explore the means to achieving this functionality.

The native function that lets us accomplish this task is the IMAGE formula. Given below is its syntax.

IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width])

url - the link or URL of the image. This must include the Internet protocol (HTTP or HTTPS) and must be enclosed in double quotes if entered as text. It can also be a reference to a cell that holds the URL.

mode - this is an optional parameter, which is 1 by default. This specifies how the image is to be sized within the cell. Below are the four different modes, using which Google Sheets renders the image in a cell.

1 - resizes the image so that it fits inside the cell while maintaining aspect ratio.

2 - stretches or compresses the image to fit inside the cell, while ignoring aspect ratio.

3 - leaves the image at original size, which may result in image cropping.

4 - lets the user define the custom size specifications.

height - this is an optional parameter that indicates how tall an image must be within the cell, and we must set mode parameter to 4 to be able to use this.

width - similar to the height parameter this is also an optional parameter that indicates how wide an image must be within the cell. To use this parameter, mode must be set to 4, otherwise the formula returns an #N/A! error.

Usage: Insert an image inside a cell in Google Sheets

Examples are the best way to internalize a concept. So, please consider the following snapshot. We have tried using the IMAGE formula in various possible ways.

Examples

In all of the cases, the value for the url parameter is either the direct URL string or a reference to the cell B1 where we stored this URL string. The URL points us to the Google logo.

In the first case (cell A4), we didn't specify the mode. So, it is by default 1 and therefore the image is fit inside the cell, but it maintained the aspect ratio.

In the IMAGE formula with the cell A6, mode parameter is 2. Which means, the image is stretched/compressed to fit inside the cell. Google Sheets ignore the image's aspect ratio in this case

In the Cells A7, we keyed in 3 for the mode parameter. This ensures that the image stays its original size. As a result, the image contour that extends beyond the borders of the cell is cropped.

In the final case (Cell A8), please note we made sure we enter 4 for mode parameter before we could add values for height and width parameters. The dimensions of the resulting image that Google Sheets displayed in this cell are 30 pixels X 200 pixels.

Congratulations! We successfully did insert an image inside a cell in Google Sheets, using various possible scenarios with the IMAGE formula!

What about direct image insert?

Most of us may be aware that we can also insert an image into the spreadsheet by navigating to Insert > Image.

Example

If we did this, how different is this image from that we inserted using the IMAGE formula? We will notice that the image is put on to the spreadsheet real estate.

Example

But then, unlike the images that we inserted using the IMAGE formula, the image we inserted here through the menu independently floats on top of the cells. It doesn't confine to the boundaries of any particular cell. We can resize and reposition it anywhere on the worksheet. Not only that we can even assign a script to this image. So when we click on it, it works like a button that triggers the script!

If you want to learn more tips about Google Sheets, read our blog post: "10 tips and tricks that maximize your results in Google Sheets"
[37
39,28
post-6051","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-google-sheets-features","tag-connections-t","tag-spreadsheets
["GET
