This is because of its real-time transfers, which means you receive the latest version of your data no matter what. But what happens when you want to track changes in Google Sheets and keep a record of the historic values from your dynamic data?

There are many instances where you would want to track previous values.

For example, to keep track of stock market prices over time to evaluate share investments or predict future prices. Or perhaps you need to track your organization’s KPIs to determine the next steps of your business strategy. So, how can you track changes in Google Sheets?

Unfortunately, Google Sheets does not yet offer a historical record feature. If you want to keep a log of data changes, you must manually copy and paste your records every time. This is extremely time-consuming and critically reduces the level of efficiency and productivity you’d otherwise have.

However, Sheetgo offers an Append feature to solve this issue. The Append feature in Sheetgo automatically makes a record of all the changes made into a spreadsheet, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

In this article, let’s explore in more detail what the Append feature is, and how you can track changes in Google Sheets automatically using the Append feature in the Sheetgo add-on.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_5,2_5″ make_equal=”on” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#d3e3ff” custom_padding=”30px|30px|30px|30px|true|true” border_radii=”on|12px|12px|12px|12px” global_module=”44972″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_css_main_element=”margin:auto” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_font_size=”33px” header_4_font_size=”24px” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” text_font_size_tablet=”17px” text_font_size_phone=”17px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” header_4_font_tablet=”” header_4_font_phone=”” header_4_font_last_edited=”on|tablet” text_orientation_tablet=”center” text_orientation_phone=”center” text_orientation_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Ready to streamline your data?

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_css_main_element=”margin:auto” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_button button_url=”https://app.sheetgo.com/” url_new_window=”on” button_text=”START NOW” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”16px” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color=”#2979ff” button_border_width=”0px” button_border_radius=”6px” button_font=”|700|||||||” button_use_icon=”off” custom_margin=”0px|0px|0px|0px|true|true” custom_margin_tablet=”10px||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”10px||||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”15px|20px|15px|20px|true|true” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” button_bg_color__hover_enabled=”on|hover” button_bg_color__hover=”rgba(41,121,255,0.7)” button_bg_enable_color__hover=”on” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”27px|0|28px|0|false|false” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Track changes in Google Sheets

Why record historical values?

Instead of entering, processing, and storing all your data in one file, a workflow keeps dynamic data safely separated and allows you to create a log of historical changes in one central master sheet. With automatic transfers, you won’t ever need to open the spreadsheet to manually enter data again!

Now that you understand what the Append feature in Sheetgo does, let’s go through a step by step on how to Append your spreadsheet data in Google Sheets using the Sheetgo add-on.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

How to track changes in Google Sheets

Let’s take the example of the stock market prices to demonstrate how to use the Append feature in the Sheetgo add-on.

In my spreadsheet, I update the same row every day with the latest stock prices for several tech companies.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://static.sheetgo.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Append-x-GS.png” alt=”track changes in google sheets 0″ title_text=”Append x GS” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

However, in order to predict future prices and evaluate which companies I should buy shares in, I need to know how these stocks are performing over a period of time.

Instead of manually copy-pasting variables every day, I can create an automated workflow to carry out this task using the Sheetgo add-on.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Step 1: Open Sheetgo

Sign up for Sheetgo by clicking the button below.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https://app.sheetgo.com/” url_new_window=”on” button_text=”SIGN UP” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”16px” button_text_color=”#ffffff” button_bg_color=”#2979ff” button_border_width=”0px” button_border_radius=”6px” button_font=”|700|||||||” button_use_icon=”off” custom_margin=”30px||30px||true|false” custom_padding=”15px|20px|15px|20px|true|true” global_module=”45040″ saved_tabs=”all” global_colors_info=”{}” button_bg_color__hover_enabled=”on|hover” button_bg_color__hover=”rgba(41,121,255,0.7)” button_bg_enable_color__hover=”on” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Or, open the Sheetgo add-on directly from inside your Google Sheets file. Data in Google Sheets can change over time depending on the inputs, formulas, and external data sources. Not surprisingly, the data we usually like to draw trends from is usually time bound. Therefore, saving historic data is the fundamental step to track changes in Google Sheets.

Why record historic values?

There are several purposes why we would want to track changes in Google Sheets. For example, to preserve laboratory readings, or organizational Key Performance Indexes (KPIs), or location specific climate profiles. In the interest of this post, let us consider the case of Andrew.

Andrew is a stock broker. He holds shares of a few companies whose stock prices he wishes to keep track of. Here is how he sees the daily stock information.

[panel type="default"] Example

[/panel]

Given the nature of his job, he analyzes how these stocks have been doing over a period of time. Hence, he will need a means to store such data on a regular basis. For Andrew to be able to track changes in Google sheets, he would have to copy and paste these values every day to record this information. The reason being that there is no feature native to Google Sheets that allows us to preserve a historic value of a changing variable. Repeating the manual copy and pasting process is not desirable at all.

Solution: Track changes in Google Sheets automatically with Sheetgo

We will use the Sheetgo Add-on's 'Append' functionality to accomplish this process. For the purpose of this demonstration we will configure Sheetgo such that the data from 'Stock prices today' file flows every day into 'Stock prices - historic data' file.

We recommend that the source data sheet (in this case 'Stock prices today') has a single tab. And also that, it contains only the data we would like to record historic values for. Doing this will ensure that we record only the variable(s) that we would like to record and not all the other data that might be on the source Google Sheet.

Following are the steps we take to realize this automation.

1) Start Sheetgo and initiate an import link connection

If not already installed, we can get Sheetgo add-on by clicking on the 'Install' button below.

[panel type="default"]

[ccj id="Install Widget"]

[/panel]

Having installed Sheetgo on our Google Sheets application, we open the 'Stock prices - historic data' file. To start the add-on, we navigate to Add-ons > Sheetgo > Start.

[panel type="default"] Example

[/panel]

Doing so will open the Sheetgo interface on the screen as a sidebar, as shown in the image below. Hover the mouse pointer over the green circle with a plus, and click on the Import option.

[panel type="default"] Example

[/panel]

2) Link the destination file with source sheet with that we need to import the data from

Clicking the ‘Append’ option leads us to the list of most recently updated files by default. If we don’t see the file we want, we can use the search module to lookup a file within the Google Drive. For this example, we select “Stock prices today” file for ‘Source spreadsheet’, and then for ‘Source sheet’ choose “Prices today”.

[panel type="default"] Example

[/panel]

3) Choose frequency and create a connection

In the 'Automatic update' section, we may choose the import time and frequency with which the data import can happen. Since Andrew needs a track of daily information, we leave it as is, i.e. 'Daily at midnight'. If it makes it convenient for us, we can edit the name of the connection with which a new sheet is created in the destination file. Once done, we now click on the CONNECT button to establish a new connection between the source and the destination file. Here's how the 'Stock prices - historic data' file will look like, immediately after we perform this step.

[panel type="default"] Example

[/panel]

If we opened the historic data file after the week ended, it should look something like this below:

[panel type="default"] Example

[/panel]

We can observe that the fresh data is appended below the existing data every day, in accordance with the varying daily input source information. Therefore, this is just a one time setup that Andrew can configure, and the Sheetgo add-on connection we just created, will automatically track changes in Google sheets.

The tracking keeps happening automatically and periodically once the appropriate connection is in place. Please note that we can change the frequency with which these data imports happen or even turn off the automatic update altogether. Shown below is how we navigate to the corresponding settings pane.

Connection name (in this case “SG_Prices today”) > edit (the pencil icon) > Automatic update > edit.

Click on the green slider button to turn the automatic update off. Instead, we can keep the automatic update active, and change the scheduling frequency and execution time as required. Once done, click OK and then on SAVE button.
[33
43
post-2700","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-how-to-solve-with-sheetgo","tag-sheetgo
["GET
